Attendance
Regular attendance for each child is necessary for maximum growth. Therefore, parents and the school should assume the responsibility for regular attendance. Please notify the school office before 8:30 A.M. on any day that your child will not be in attendance, and by 7:45 A.M. if your child will be late. A message may be left on the office voice mail at any time. 

There are two reasons why this should be done as early as possible: 
1. The home and school need to know quickly if any child left home but did not arrive at school. 
2. School district officials are required to know the reason for absences for the State Department of Education Attendance Accounting Procedures.

Tardy Policy 
When students are tardy, they must report to the office for a late pass. This late pass ensures the student's name will be removed from the daily absentee report.

Middle School Attendance Policy
In keeping with the overall attendance policy and the laws of the state of Arizona, the following rules shall apply to middle school students who are absent:

1. All teachers have the homework for their class posted clearly in their classrooms. A student who has been absent need only copy the homework from the assignment board in each class.
2. A student wishing to make up class work will need to make an appointment to see the teacher during early morning (7:30-7:55), lunch time (12:05-12:45), or after school.
3. A student absent on the day homework or class work is given will have extra days to turn in an assignment, depending on how many days in a row the student was absent.
4. A student absent on the day an assignment is due will be expected to turn in the assignment the first day the student returns to school, even if the student does not have the class in question on that day.
5. No extra days will be given for make-up work if the student was present on the day the assignment was given. 
6. Exception to the above rules will be given under extreme circumstances such as hospitalization, family emergencies, or serious illness. In these instances, the school office must be notified.

Health Office
The Health Office is managed by a Registered Nurse. Your child should not be in school if he or she has a fever, rash of undetermined cause, vomiting or diarrhea, conjunctivitis (pink eye), chicken pox, impetigo, ringworm, or head lice unless they have been treated medically or are symptom free. A child who has vomited, has had diarrhea or a temperature of 100 degrees F. or greater will be sent home. Additionally, your child should remain fever free for a period of 24 hours prior to returning to school. 

Student emergency information is kept in the office. The information is used to contact parents or designated adults if an emergency arises. Most calls are made simply because the child is feeling ill and needs to be sent home. If you are called to pick up a sick child, please come to the health office located within the school office.

*Parents should be aware of the importance of the emergency contacts and phone number section of the emergency information form. These are the people called in the event of an emergency and when parents cannot be reached.It is imperative that the school office be informed of any changes in address, phone number, parent's employment, guardianship, and emergency numbers.If your child needs to take prescription medication at school, it is necessary for the parent to sign a consent form. These forms are available in the Health Office.*Prescription medication must be in the original, labeled container as prepared by a pharmacist and include: patient name, name of medication, dosage, and time to be given. Over-the-counter medications must be in the original packaging, with all directions, dosages, compound contents, and proportions clearly marked. A signed physician's statement indicating the necessity must accompany any request for administration of over-the-counter medicine. A parent of guardian must personally deliver medications to the health office.Lunch Program 
Lunch is available for purchase daily. Each child may pay for his/her lunch on a daily basis or lunch tickets for the entire week may be purchased by cash or check. Milk may be purchased separately. A menu will be published and sent home on a monthly basis.

School Policy Regarding Money 
Bringing money, other than the amount needed for lunch, is strongly discouraged. There may be occasions, however, when the teacher may ask your child to bring money for a special project, field trip and/or bake sale. The buying and selling of items by individuals other than an approved group is prohibited.

Field Trips
Student field trips are contingent upon prior work completion.

A+ = 100
A = 95.00-99.00
A- = 94.00
B+ = 93.00
B = 87.00-92.00
B- = 86.00
C+ = 85.00
C = 76.00-84.00
C- = 75.00
D+ = 74.00
D = 69.00-73.00
D- = 68.00
F=67.00 and Below


Honor Roll Policy
An honor roll system is an additional means for encouraging goal setting by students and for providing recognition of students who have achieved those goals.
Honor roll is used in grades five through eight. The Superintendent has established the achievement level for honor roll as:
Gold Honor Roll=4.0 GPA
Silver Honor Roll=3.50-3.99 GPA
Bronze Honor Roll=3.25-3.49 GPA 
Honor roll is determined by the grade point average in the core subjects of Math, Science, Social Studies, and English. A student receiving a C in any core course should not be eliminated from the honor roll as long as that student’s GPA falls within tier one, two, or three. 
At the beginning of the academic year, all students will be informed of the honor roll system and the qualifications necessary to obtain honor roll status. 
The District will promote public recognition of students who have attained honor roll status.

Personal Messages
Students may use the school telephones only in cases of emergency. If parents/guardians need to send a message to a student during the school day, they may call the school secretary before 1:00 PM. Because the office is very busy prior to school dismissal, messages received after 1:00 PM are not guaranteed to be delivered to the student. Parents/Guardians should try, to avoid using the school secretary as a messenger; she is extremely busy already! Parents/Guardians are also requested to give advance notification of changes in a students’ routine (e.g., absence or different bus) in writing if

possible.

Visitors

All visitors are asked to inform the classroom teacher and principal in advance as to the day and time of the visit. This will avoid any conflicts with the school schedule. Visitors must report to the school office first to obtain a visitor’s pass. This registration rule applies to all visitors, including family members of students and staff.

Personal Belongings
Students are responsible for all personal items brought to school. Since the school day is filled with activities and responsibilities, it is best if students leave personal items at home. Some personal items are not allowed at school, including Walkmen, Discmen, and electronic games. Illegal substances, such as drugs and alcohol, are strictly forbidden on school grounds.

Parent Involvement Policy for Elgin School
          At Elgin School we want each child to have a successful learning experience.  For this to happen, it is important that the school staff, the community, and families work together.
          Parents and school have agreed on and developed the following Parent Involvement Policy for Elgin School.  It will be posted in the school office as well as on the school web site.  A copy of this policy will be included in the school newsletter.  Any additional suggestions will be considered for future revision.
          In order to build a strong partnership between home and school, we will provide the following:
* An annual Open House where parents will meet teachers, learn about the Title I program requirements, and be given opportunities to become involved in their child's education.
  • * A minimum of one meeting will be held during the school year where parents will have an opportunity to help review, plan for and make suggestions to improve the Title I program, the Parent Involvement Policy, and the School-Parent Learning Compact.
  • * Additional meetings throughout the year to provide assistance to parents in understanding the State's and our District's assessments.  Meetings will also focus on how parents and teachers can work together to monitor the child's progress in order to improve student achievement.  Particular topics and needs from parents will be addressed through timely meetings.
  • * Quarterly progress reports and semester parent conferences will be the standard, more often upon request.
  • * Materials and specific training to help parents work with their children will be made available.  For example: 
    1.         1.   Classes for parents in reading and writing strategies, using magnetic letters, ABC and strategy charts, and sentence puzzles
    2.         2.   Make books available for parent check-out
  • * An ongoing invitation will be offered to parents for visitation and observation in the Title I or regular classrooms.
  • * At least one scheduled parent conference where the progress of the student will be discussed and explained, as well as the expectations for the grade level, school curriculum, academic assessment, state academic content and achievement standards, and any other concerns that the teacher or parent may have.  Communication will be continuous either by telephone, quarterly progress reports or in person.
  • * Monthly newsletters and weekly notes, as appropriate, informing parents of activities and programs.  Additionally, the outside marquee will provide advance notice of upcoming events.
  • * A school-parent compact designed by parents and school staff that outlines how parents, school staff, and students share the responsibility for improvement in learning.
  • * A survey for all parents of participating students to express opinions about the current Title I program as well as to list ideas and suggestions for improvement and topics for meetings to meet the needs of the parents.
Parent and community leaders are always welcome at Elgin School.  By making suggestions to improve our school and by working together we can make a difference at Elgin School.
